Soon after my cousin, the late Rev. Canon David J Wilkinson (Vicar Of |Pennard and Ilston), died in mid February 2011, the Vicarage was being cleared of everything in readiness for his family to vacate the property, when amongst the contents of the garage was ‘found’ a large wall plaque dedicated to the memory of a past (and much respected) Headmaster of Swansea National School, Oxford Street, Swansea.

Apparently the plaque had been in the garage when the Rev. Canon David J Wilkinson was appointed Vicar of Pennard and Ilston, in c.1995, and it had been seen on a few occasions since, but now it was time for the family to move, the plaque came to light once more.

The actual wording can be read on the following link Plaque (facsimile of) erected at Natnl Schl Oxfd St in memory of JWC whilst to see an overview of where he was at particular points in his life, you might be interested in the following Timeline for John William Cadwalladr’s 1844-1910 life

Along with the plaque itself, I had also researched much about John William Cadwalladr [sic: Cadwallader], and both the plaque and printed copies of my research were deposited at Swansea Museum (the old Royal Institution of Wales), Swansea, UK, in the name and memory of the late Rev. Canon David J Wilkinson.

Why the plaque to John William Cadwalladr ended up in Pennard Vicarage’s garage is a real mystery, but that he had been one of Swansea’s nineteenth century’s characters is evidenced from the amount of information available. Hopefully the discovery (or should that be rediscovery?!) of the plaque and what has been noted re his time at the Swansea National School, Oxford Street, Swansea, might provide new interest in both the school and the man.

Anyway, I do hope that you’ll find the information to be of interest, and if you have anything to add to Pennard’s timeline, then I look forward to hearing from you.

JONES John Kenneth “Ken” Peacefully on Thursday 28th April 2011 at Campion Gardens Retirement Village, Ken (formerly of The Drive, Southgate), beloved husband of Lucy, much loved father of Tim and Kerry, dearly loved grandpa of Lowri, Shona, Gemma and Alun Wyn and adored pops of Evie, Finley, Lily and Georgie. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Telephone 01792 643840.

Ken was a real character; one of those people nearly everyone (whether local or visitor) knew, and who had an interest in anything in and around the Pennard area.

Deeply involved for most of his life with the Southgate County Club, Ken enjoyed life to the full, loved his wife, was ever so proud of both of his Children, and of all of his grandchildren, whilst towards the last couple of years of his life, he was blessed by the arrival of four great grandchildren.

THE COLEMAN DEEDS INDEX 1442-1864

This is a precis of Bob Sanders’ index to the Calendar of Deeds & Documents, Vol.1, The Coleman Deeds (National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1921), Francis Green (compiler) , with especial relevance to Pennard, Kittle and Ilston, Glamorgan. The original Deeds were purchased by the National Library of Wales from Mr James Coleman.

The original Deeds are held at the National Library of Wales, but transcripts of them are contained in the Calendar, of which 500 copies were printed around 1921.

The index compiled so far includes all persons named in the Calendar, including witnesses, Attorneys etc, and can be viewed by going to the link http://www.angelfire.com/ga/BobSanders/site.html and scrolling down the page until “Indexes to Original Documents” is found, and then by clicking on the 4 indexes shown for The Coleman Deeds.

The indexes are alphabetical, by surname. Where there are variant spellings of a surname Bob Sanders attempted to group these together, eg Bidder, Bydder. It would still be wise, however, for anyone using the index to check variant spellings to be on the safe side; where an occupation other than Gent or Yeoman is referred to such is included in brackets after the name eg Thomas, John (mercer). Similarly, where a relationship between persons indexed is given Bob Sanders included this in brackets eg Jones, Ann (wife of John Jones); the place name which follows the personal name is that which is shown in the description of the person – it is not necessarily the same as the place which the deed relates to (and there are a number of places outside Glamorgan listed in the full indexes because the person concerned was from outside the county, although also holding land or office in Glamorgan). The date following the place name is the year of the Deed or the year which the Deed reffers to; the DD number after the date is the Deed Reference Number; the letters in brackets after the DD number are as follows:-

Amt= Agreement
Assign = Assignment
Att = Attested Copy
Bond = Bond
Cert = Certificate
Court Roll – Copy of Original Roll
Decree = Decree in Chancery
DP = Deed Poll
Est = Estreat
Exem = Exemplification
Grant = Grant
Ind = Indenture
Ind Mar = Indenture related to a marriage
LP = Letters Patent
Mand = Mandate
Memo = Memorandum
PA = Power of Attorney
Sched = Schedule
Will = Probate of Will

NB: Where a name is not followed by a place it is likely that the person listed was a witness to the Deed eg Jones, William 1655 DD 990 (Ind) would suggest that a William Jones was a witness to Deed No.990 (an Indenture) in 1655.

THE INDEX

B

For anyone who watched Roy Noble’s First Click on BBC TV (BBC2) at 7.00pm this evening (Wednesday 10 November 2010), in which Roy ventured out of his Radio Wales studio to find out how people around Wales are using their computers to indulge in their interests and passions, mention of the website People’s Collection Wales particularly caught both my eyes and ears.

Having just saved you having to search through the 985 or so images relating to Swansea (and area) - searchable over 330 pages! - I have discovered that of the images relating to Pennard and Area, most are for Pennard Castle and for Gower Heritage Centre at Parkmill , although other images of features in and around the area are to be found on the site.

Images I have noted (up to 10 November 2010) are as follows;-

PENNARD CASTLE

As and when more images are added to the People’s Collection Wales website I hope to include them on the Pennard & Area Local History’s own site(s). If in the meantime you have any images relating to Pennard & Area which may be of interest, then perhaps you might consider adding them to both this website as well as to the People’s Collection Wales site.

Yet another ‘new’ (or newly discovered) website which has both a general and specific interest.

‘General’, because the Home page of “British Listed Buildings Online” states;-

“Welcome to British Listed Buildings, an online database of buildings and structures that are listed as being of special architectural and historic interest.

As well as reading the official listing data for each building, you can also view the location on a map, and, where possible, see it in Google Streetview and Bing Birds Eye View. You can also add your own comments, information and photos and view comments and photos submitted by other users of the site.

You can browse for listed buildings by country, county and parish/locality: Listed Buildings in England; Listed Buildings in Scotland and Listed Buildings in Wales. Alternatively, you can use the [site's] search page to search for buildings by name/description text or by postcode“.

‘Specific’ because one can check for a property by name, postcode or even Street name and/or Village, although as to the ‘completeness’ of the list of buildings one has to query that, if only because in Pennard parish, we have two Listed Buildings, namely the Lodge at the entrance to Kilvrough, and Henbury Cottage in Southgate, although the British Listed Buildings Online site appears to have omitted the latter Cottage!

Having said that, the site does look interesting, and descriptions, Maps/Locations etc for properties which are included on the site, are detailed.

Just before I head for bed, I’ve just found another interesting website which mentions Pennard (and Ilston, and Bishopston Higher and Bishopston Lower, as well as other Villages in and around Gower).

This new finding, which is named British Surnames says on it’s Home page “Welcome to the British Surnames website. Here, you can find information on similar surnames, most common surnames, surname meanings and etymologies as well as discussing your name in the forum.

As the name suggests, this site primarily lists surnames commonly found in Britain, but many of these are found in other parts of the world as well – so even if you’re not British, your name could well be in here!“ Having said that, neither the surname of Eunson (see Kittle) nor Powditch were included within the whole of the UK, yet I know that there were several in England and Wales at the time of the 1881 Census!

Whilst in time I hope that it will be possible to add names and other details of those living in Pennard Parish during the taking of the 1841-1911 Censuses, this new British Surnames site may, in the interim, help to show the”Top surnames by total occurrences” and the”Top surnames by population index” for the Villages mentioned above.

phistory

P.S. You also may find the site’s About page of interest as it provides background to the site’s origins etc.

You’ll probably recognise the situation.

There I was, looking for information on a Norfolk Village (nothing whatsoever to do with Pennard!) when I came across a website I’d not previously known, yet what it contained was of great interest, especially when I did a search on the site for Pennard.

The site has the title of “A Vision of Britain through Time“, and what it offers - either by the user entering a place name or even a Postcode - is information relating to the place’s Location, Historical writing, Units & Statistics, Related websites and Place names, each of which, when the relevant links (left-hand column of the page) are clicked on, takes the user to a fascinating and useful set of information.

Having already accessed the site, I can give you the direct link for ‘our’ Pennard whilst when you are on the page you arrive at, you’ll notice that apart from an 1870-72 description of Pennard, there is extra information advising that the site “includes a large library of local statistics for administrative units. For the best overall sense of how the area containing Pennard has changed, please see our redistricted information for the modern district of Swansea. More detailed statistical data are available under Units and statistics, which includes both administrative units covering Pennard and units named after it.“

I hope that you’ll find A Vision of Britain through Time as interesting and useful as I have, and if you have interests in other parts of Gower, Swansea or further afield, that the site may well help you discover ‘new’ information about your particular area of interest.
